Filter which users sync

By default ConnectActive syncs every user it finds in a company’s sources. Filtering limits the sync to some of them, for example:

  • a directory or tenant that holds several companies, of which this ConnectWise company is one (Sync a multi-company directory);
  • users to leave out, such as students, outside consultants, a Disabled Users OU or a System Accounts OU.

When a filter is set, ConnectActive syncs only the users inside it. Contacts of the company that are outside the filter are deactivated in ConnectWise at the next committed sync, so check the Review Form before committing.

The tab is on the company’s Settings. It is called Filtering for a company whose sources have no OUs (Microsoft 365 only) and OU Filtering when it has Active Directory or Google Workspace.

For Microsoft 365 / Entra ID:

  1. Open the company’s Settings and select Filtering.
  2. Tick each group whose members you want to sync, and each Assigned License whose users you want to sync. The card shows Groups/Licenses selected to include. With nothing ticked, every user is synced.
  3. Click Perform Sync, check the Review Form and click COMMIT (Review and commit a sync).

The list includes ConnectActive’s dynamic groups, such as a department or an email domain, so you can filter on those too.

For Active Directory or Google Workspace:

  1. Open the company’s Settings and select OU Filtering.
  2. Tick each OU whose users you want to sync. With nothing ticked, the whole directory is searched.
  3. Choose, for each ticked OU, whether it includes its child OUs: the icon next to it switches between Include all existing and new Children under this OU and Only this OU Selected. Under an OU that includes its children, a child can be clicked to block it.
  4. Perform and commit a sync as above.

Show Selected Only narrows the list to what you ticked. A company with both Active Directory and Microsoft 365 can use Switch to Group Filtering instead, and back with Switch to OU Filtering.

When filtering by OU in a company that also syncs Microsoft 365, Microsoft 365 users with no Active Directory account are left out, unless Include Microsoft 365 Only Accounts when OU Filtering is ticked in Sync Settings.

A filter limits which users sync, not what a mapping counts. A group, license or OU mapping counts all of its members unless the mapping has Limit to Filtered Users ticked (Mapping options).
